Film and Television
Today I watched the film Suspiria. The use of lighting is so exquisite as they use bright coloured lighting in intense scenes to heighten the mood and tone, but they also use the coloured lighting throughout the whole film in other scenes that aren't as active which not only just adds to the constant feel of the film and subtly tell the audience how they should be feeling, but also creates the films own unique style that helps make it stand out. For my film, the main goal is to make something new and interesting (and of course good), and to help with setting it apart visually comes from the mise-en-scene , which lighting is quite a big part of as not many films usually have different or extreme lighting. I also hope that it will add to the feeling of the film and help get across the tone to the audience.

Recently I saw the Black Mirror episode 'Striking Vipers'. I really liked how they incorporated the video game aesthetic, and how they used colour, titles and camera movements to appear as if it was actually a game. I also liked how when people played as video game characters, they were different people.

I watched this short film 'Dolor' and I thought the stop animation was really cool. I liked the simplicity of the the plot, and by using animation they were able to create some amazing and interesting visuals that would not have been achievable without animation or a big budget. Also the stop animation gives it such a distinctive style that makes it stand out.

I rewatched the adult swim skit "Too Many Cooks" recently. I liked how they used common sitcom tropes and subverted them by repeating the theme song and adding more and more characters and then having a sort of inception feeling with the different events coming in through the the 10 minute run.

I found the film Kick Ass really fun and interesting to watch. I particularity liked this fight scene with Hit Girl as the sound is contrapuntal with how happy it sounds and she is straight up brutally killing these people, but it also parallels as the tempo of the score is upbeat and fast which matches the pace of the quick action in the scene.

I was reminded of the Black Museum episode of Black Mirror as it too has a narrative centered around a toy and I really like the concept they used of the toy having it's own life.

Recently watched Pan's Labyrinth and I liked the use of some film techniques to express childlike innocence and the difference between the real world and the fantasy world with duel diegesis (contrasting lighting and colouring).

I really love the opening montage to the movie Up. It is very sweet and the way it is told flows nicely especially with the music accompanying it. I like how the music has happier parts and sadder parts just like my story and could be something I use in my film to enhance the tone of it and the emotions in the audience.

All of these clips have been suggested by Mr Lambert to help with the plot, script and style of my film. They are all pretty helpful and add their own little quirks that could make my film something special.
Video Essays & Final Cut Pro Tutorials
In Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, Edgar Wright uses match cuts, whip pans and wipes not only draws the audience along the story, but also makes the audience more observant as the transitions either disappear or stand out while watching.

This video talks about aspects that can be used to make a film more cinematic. This includes changing the aspect ratio for a wider frame by changing the format and resolution when setting up a project, adding in slow mo clips, but only clips that have higher frames per second and shutter speed, using dietetic sounds to build the world, colour grading and using the stabilizer. I think these are some very useful tips that will hopefully help my film have a more cinematic, and less amateur look.

These videos show how to do clone freeze frame sequences, which I think could be a cool editing aspect to add in my film. Obviously I would need to practice trying to do it first before I can be sure to include it, but I think it could look very good if I can execute it well.

This video on how to colour grade in final cut I think will be very helpful. I want to know how to colour grade properly because I really don't know what to do when it comes to colour, saturation and exposure. This video presents a pretty straight forward system for colour grading that I hope I will be able to follow and make my footage look nice and appear stylized. |
